Science With Us
Our Story
The seeds of Science With Us were sewn in early 2022 when Steven gave a microscope to a student who he was mentoring. They looked at leaves, flowers, pollen, dirt, insects, aquatic microorganisms, and pretty much everything else they could find under the microscope. The student’s friends also wanted to see what their world looks like on a microscopic level, so Steven began leading “science in the park” days. One day, their “science in the park” group was forced into a library due to inclement weather. They quickly found themselves surrounded by other kids who wanted to learn about biology. Parents at the library expressed a desire for more science content, which inspired Steven to establish more programs where kids could use microscopes to enhance their understanding of the world.
The first library science event took place in September 2022 and was hosted by the Bolivar-Harpers Ferry Library in Harpers Ferry, WV. This was an overwhelmingly positive experience and Steven started to schedule events at more libraries in the area. He has also led classrooms of students and participated in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) events at local schools. In spring of 2023, while Steven was writing and preparing to defend his doctoral dissertation, he found other grad students who wanted to join his mission and Science With Us was born.
We are a small, new organization and we look forward to growing our capabilities in order to maximize our impact on students and communities in the DC area and beyond.
